Ah, hell. Not this. What was it with women, anyway? Why’d they have this burning desire to get to the bottom of absolutely every feeling they had? Why couldn’t they sit in silence, enjoy the scenery? “I don’t know you well enough to be upset with you,” he finally said, increasing his pressure on the gas pedal. The cops were notorious for pulling over speeders on this section through town, but tonight he was willing to risk “Look.” Avery’s hands sliced the air in front of her. “I understand why you don’t want to sell. Trust me. I get it.”

Ha. Trust her. He didn’t trust her any more than he trusted her father. At the end of the day, she worked for the infamous Edward King. She might be smokin’ hot and nice, and, like she insisted, a good person, but she still had a job to do. He wouldn’t forget that.

Instead of answering, he leaned over and flicked on the radio. Nothing like a little Brad Paisley to tune out a woman.

Avery shot him a fiery look, topaz eyes blazing, lips thinned into a warning that tempted him to test her.

That didn’t help things. She looked even better when she got mad. His grip on the wheel tightened until his knuckles ached. Mom was right. He had to get out more. Start dating again. Any woman besides Avery King…

She hunched forward and fiddled with the radio until he could hardly hear Paisley. Fine. That was fine. Five more minutes and they’d be back at the ranch anyway.

He’d be free of her.

“You need to listen to me, Bryce. Please.” She launched into yet another impassioned monologue about how selling the ranch could change his life.

Yeah, well. He’d had enough changes in his life over the last few years. So sue him if he wasn’t interested. She didn’t seem to pick up on his lack of concentration, though. She went on and on until he pulled the truck into the driveway and parked in front of the office.

“Are you listening to me?” She leaned over the console between them and got in his face, close enough that he could smell oranges, that he could trace the sexy curve of her upper lip with his tongue if he’d wanted to.

“Have you heard anything I’ve said?”

The throb started again, deep in his chest, invading his body until it occupied all of him.

“Seriously, Bryce this is—”

Screw it. He cupped his hand around the back of her head and roughly brought her lips to his, totally unprepared for the impact it would have. Shock waves coursed through him, unleashing a craving stronger than he’d ever felt.

Avery squeaked in surprise but he didn’t let up. Need thundered through him and it was a helluva lot louder than the logic he’d spent the last several hours beating into his thick skull. Her lips were soft and moist and everything he’d hungered for during the last three lonely years. He gentled a hand up into her hair. It felt like silk against his skin.

A small moan purred in her throat and her upper body relaxed, lips melding to his in a pulsating heat. She ran her hands up his chest, and that was all he needed. He bent forward, halfway over the console, gathering her closer, kissing her harder, deeper. If it wasn’t for that console, he’d pull her right into his lap…

“Wow. Just…wow,” she whispered against his lips.

He answered by parting her lips with his tongue. There. That’d take care of her chatting problem.

Avery gasped a sharp intake of air, her chest rising against his.

Taking it as an invitation, he commanded her with his lips, opening and closing them in a sensual rhythm. A dull ache resounded in his chest. God, he’d forgotten the depth of a kiss…

He shifted to get a better angle, more access, but that console…

She pulled back with a small smile, lips grazing his in a tease, then she pressed in again and proved that she could make out as well as she could talk.

A scratching sound scraped the window. Moose whined, then barked.

Great timing, as usual.

What do I think?

Well, this was a very enjoyable story; when things go south for Avery King she heads to Aspen for work. In Aspen, Avery needs to get the land owned by Bryce Walker. Obviously Bryce says no and these two start butting heads. Not to worry, a little fighting is very good for a budding romance.

Bryce is swoon worthy, at least the way I picture him in my head he is; plus the cover on the book helps with that. Avery is so awesome, she's strong and smart; this is such a plus because you normally get these pushover females. The way Bryce and Avery play off each other really helps you get invested in the story.

Displaying Lemmon_Rescuing the Bad Boy_MM.jpgExcerpt

Her soft touch landed on Donovan’s arm, and the anger shuddering inside him shifted into an ache. She stepped closer, the warmth between them radiating enough heat to set him on fire. But like the fireplaces he built, he could handle it. He could handle the heat from her, not because he was impervious, but because he was strong enough to soak her in and not burn to ash.

She turned his arm where paint was drying. She swiped at it with her sleeve. “I made a mess.”

He’d forgotten about the paint. “Don’t… I can… There is a shower in the…” He lost his train of thought when she turned those emerald green eyes up to him. He watched her delicate throat work as she swallowed. His eyes traveled up her neck and landed on her mouth. Needing her mouth, he lowered his face, watched her eyes grow dark and wide, watched her lift her chin to meet him.

Heat. He wanted more. If only to test his own strength.

He moved his lips gently against hers, but resisted holding her to him. She held onto him though, grasping his forearms with both hands, her fingers wrapped around his elbows. Pressing her body against his, pressing her tits against his ribs.

Hell, sounded like an invitation to him.  Deepening their connection, he thrust his tongue into her mouth, reached around, and grabbed her ass with both palms. When he squeezed, she sucked in a breath.

“Told you,” he rumbled.

“Told me?”

“Not a complaint, Scampi.” He squeezed again. “Perfect.”

A choked laugh left her throat. “Big.”

Still moving his hands over her backside, he said, “First thing I noticed about you at the Wharf.” He’d been plating up a chicken scaloppini when the manager walked in to show around a few new servers. Two he couldn’t remember, and Sofie. Bent over the plate, he’d peeked between the metal shelves framing that perfect ass. He’d stood to get a better look, and she’d pegged him with those moss-greens.

“Second thing I noticed was your eyes.”

Her lips parted slightly. “And the third thing?”

He kissed her. She tasted incredible. “The first time you talked to me.”

She rolled her eyes. “And what did I say?”

She didn’t think he remembered. She was wrong. “‘Can I get a side of cock?’”

Laughing, she shook her head.

He smiled back at her, unable to help himself. “Then you cleared your throat and said, ‘cocktail sauce’.”

Shaking her head, she said, “Worst abbreviation ever.”

“Kitchen guys are immature.”

She blinked up at him, studying him, like she was trying to piece him together. He didn't want her to. Once she pieced him together and had the whole picture, she wouldn’t like what she saw.

He kissed her again, keeping his hands on her body.

“Are you testing my boundaries?” she asked, her tone teasing. He recognized that comment from the night he rescued her from Torsett.

“Mine,” he corrected.

Sofie bit her lip. “I don’t date much.”

“Me either.” At all, actually.

She shook her head, more in thought than in argument. “I don’t think I have any boundaries with you.”

He was beginning to think he had none with her, either.

What do I think?

I hate it, I love it; it was so full of angst and drama and emotion. Donovan was such an ass at first, but as you get to know his character you understand him and you understand why he is that way. Sofie is such a sweetheart with a great personality.

As these two have to work together, feelings get rekindled and seeing them come together again is just wow. I really enjoyed this story, the compelling storytelling really makes you as a reader feel invested in these characters.

Excerpt

I’ve heard enough; maybe I should take another week off and recover from my messy life before I try to make nice with the guy sitting at Henry’s old desk. Nope. Face on, baby. I march to the office and knock. At first no one answers, so I pound on the door again.

“Come in,” I hear.

I prance inside, ready to work some magic. Only he’s not what I expected. In fact, I’m near speechless. I know clothes, including men’s fashion. That’s a charcoal tonal-stripe, two-piece Brioni suit hugging the broadest set of shoulders I’ve ever seen. I clear my throat, quickly reconsidering my approach.

He doesn’t even bother looking up. “Never seen a man in a suit before, Ms. Taylor?”

How did he know my name and what I was thinking? Arrogant bastard. “Not behind Henry’s desk,” I answer, completely disarmed.

My gaze shoots around the familiar space. The old saloon artwork has been replaced with inspirational sport prints. I’m drawn to one in particular that features a football player sprinting with a ball in his hands. I snicker at the caption: strive—respect cannot be learned, purchased or acquired—it can only be earned.

“Do you find something humorous?” He finally looks up from his paperwork.

His emerald gaze is piercing. And I’m already crushing on this Jensen Ackles look-alike with a mane of unruly blond curls. “Yeah,” I snap. “Your ridiculous policies.” I instantly regret what I said. But talk about an icy welcome, he didn’t even say hello. Neither did you, I remind myself.

He studies me, making my insides squirm. “I’m fully aware of the problems most of the women have with the new rules.” He gestures to the guest chair nearest me. “Please, sit.”

I do.

“I’m also acquainted with your history, Ms. Taylor.” He thumbs through a stack of files, then pulls one from the pile, dropping it on top of his desk. “I’ve read your personnel file cover to cover.”

I’m not surprised. It’s pretty thick—like a paperback, really. “And?”

He gives me a lopsided grin. “Are you familiar with the term charismatic leadership?”

I tap my chin. Is that what he thinks I am? “Many of history’s most effective leaders have been charismatic . . .”

“Yes,” he cuts me off. “I believe Charles Manson falls under the same category.”

What the hell? “Not that kind of killa,” I assure him, leaning forward. “And I’m not comfortable with what you’re insinuating.”

“And what’s that?” He places his elbows on the desk, then folds his hands.

“Didn’t they teach you any manners at that state school?” I ask, knowing full well he’s Ivy League. I hurriedly scan the wall behind him, sure his grad degree will be hanging there in a sterling silver or pewter frame. I know his type too well. “You look corn-fed. Iowa State University?”

He chuckles. “Now I’m the one who doesn’t know whether I should be offended or flattered.” He reclines in his chair. “I’m a Cornell graduate, Ms. Taylor.”

“Impressive,” I say. “How does that correlate with running off half the girls from the hottest club in Corpus?”

He ignores my question and instead, extends his hand. “Joshua Camden.”

Having just shed one pedigreed asshole, I’m in no hurry to meet another. But I take his hand anyway. “Charmed.”

This is book three in the series and this is Macey's story; we have a cheating dirtbag boyfriend and a hot new boss Joshua, with whom she has instant chemistry.

Macey is a strong lead and her bickering with Joshua really adds to the way the two characters just click. Of course, we have drama in the form of exes trying to snake their ways back into the picture, but that's okay because it just gets you more hooked.

Throughout the series we've seen glimpses of Macey and now that she has her own book we get her full story and so much more insight into her. Joshua is at first Mr. Stick-up-his-ass all these rules and regulations but he's totally forgiven because all of that is what ignites the spark between him and Macey.

October Faction Volume 1 (October Faction, #1) by Steve Niles, Damien Worm (Illustrator)

25061099
Think the Addams family in modern times with a lot more ass-kicking action.

The art was good and I was totally digging the dark, haunted vibe of the town.

My absolute favorite scene is where Frederick (the dad) kills his nemesis (temporarily, the bad guys always find a way to resurrect themselves) and his kids are like you killed him and he's like yeah, wanna bury the body like a family?

The family dynamics were just so funny and the art really has you wanting to read more, plus the ending was such a hooker.

Twisted Dark, Volume 2 (Twisted Dark #2) by Neil Gibson

22376418Like Volume 1 we get a compilation of illustrated short tales that focus on the inner darkness and deplorability of humans. It's an interesting and somewhat disturbing read. I mean, there was one story where I was like damn that is just so wrong.

Overall, not for everyone's taste, but definitely worth checking out.

Val brushed the side of her face with the back of his hand, moved closer.

Meg stopped playing, felt her pulse jump.

“Where’s Michael?” Val whispered.

“Michael?” The name didn’t register.

Val lifted his left eyebrow. “The man you’re here with.”

Right. “He’s a …” Damn, he smelled edible.

Val’s palm captured her neck and guided her to her feet. “He’s just a friend, isn’t he, Margaret?”

The way Val’s lips moved drew her closer. The need to taste them, feel them on hers was impossible to walk away from. “If I told you we were more than friends…”

Val’s eyes traveled from her lips to her eyes. “Then I’d have to let you go.” He loosened his fingers on her neck, but instead of moving away, Meg leaned in.

“Sounds like you might regret that decision.” She laid a hand on his firm chest. The man wasn’t soft under his stuffy suits.

“I don’t pursue another man’s woman.”

He wasn’t moving away.

“Good to hear, Masini.” She lifted her lips close to his, felt his breath mix with hers. “I don’t belong to anyone.”

Val hesitated for a nanosecond, and then took her lips. His closed-mouth kiss started off soft, like a hesitant man worried about rushing. Yet when Val wrapped his free hand around her waist, and his body fit against hers, Meg opened for him, encouraged him to taste.

When he did she lost it. He tasted of bourbon and sex. God help her, she wanted to crawl into his kiss and explore it for hours. The man kissed like he was on a mission. And maybe he was. Who knew if Val Masini made it a weekly occurrence to kiss a new woman? Somehow, she didn’t think so. He was too reserved most of the time.

Not now … not with his tongue exploring her and his strong hands pressing the small of her back closer. Every hard ridge of the man met with every soft curve of hers.

The kiss went on until she found her chest tightening with a familiar warning. Sexual excitement had to be paced or she might find herself in a full-blow asthma attack. A frustrating fact of her life in the last few years. One that kept her single most of the time, her encounters lukewarm at best.

Val was threatening the air in her lungs with just a kiss.

A heated knock her on her ass kiss, but a kiss nonetheless.

She eased away and Val chased her lips.

She tried to slow her breathing, couldn’t catch a deep breath. “Wait,” she managed, pulling away.

“Too much, cara?”

You have no idea.

Excerpt

I wait for Sebastian to say something, but he doesn’t. Instead, he just settles back into his chair. Watches. Waits. He’s good at that. Good at gathering all the facts before making a decision. It’s part of the reason I’m here. He’s also loyal as fuck. Another reason I’m here. And he knows me better than just about anyone, even Chloe.

Which is the only reason I’m okay showing him my weakness here. Because he already sees it. Just like I see his.

“I can’t fucking sleep,” I finally tell him, staring down into my empty glass and wishing for a little more scotch to make confession time go more easily. “Can’t fucking breathe. All I can do is think about what he did to her. About how he raped her and then shoved her out of the car onto the street like she was garbage. Like she was nothing.

“And she’s not the only one he did that to.” Because I’m clenching my hand so tightly I’m afraid I’ll break the glass I’m holding, I slam it down onto the coffee table between us. The sharp crack it makes when it hits echoes through the room like a shot. “He just turned twenty-five.

He’s running for fucking Congress. It’s his first step toward the White House and there’s a damn good chance he’s going to win the seat. He’s a fucking rapist and he’s going to be a fucking member of the House of Representatives. Give it a few years and then he’ll be a senator and then who the fuck knows? President?

“The thought makes me fucking sick, Sebastian. Chloe still has nightmares about what he did to her and that bastard is going to get a seat in Congress? Over my dead body. Over my dead, fucking body.”

I probably sound like a crazy man, but I can’t help it. Shit, this is Chloe I’m talking about.

This is my woman who’s been hurt—and the fact that I unwittingly played a part in it? It makes my skin crawl.

Sebastian must get it, though, because instead of commenting on the fact that I seem a little unhinged, he just watches me over the rim of his scotch as he takes another sip. And then he asks, “So what’s the plan?”

“The plan?” I echo, not because I don’t have one but because—despite the fact that we’ve been friends since we were eighteen-year-old college roommates—I expected more questions from him. A little bit of doubt, maybe.

But there is no doubt. There’s nothing but support and assurance in his gaze when he clarifies, “What are we going to do about it?”

That loyalty, that absolute I’ve-got-your-back attitude is part of the reason I’m here. Because he’s always had my back, just like I’ve always had his.

“We’re going to ruin him,” I tell him, determined that he knows exactly what he’s getting into with this. “I can’t send him to jail—at least not for raping Chloe. Not with the ironclad NDA she’s signed. But I’ve been digging and the son of a bitch has been playing fast and loose with the law since before he was legal. He’s a rapist and a thief and a dealer—and that’s just what I know about so far. There’s no way he’s winning that election. No fucking way.”

“What does Vegas have to do with any of that?” Sebastian asks. “Because you could have filled me in on this over the phone.”

This is where it gets tricky. Not because I think he’ll chicken out, but because I know what I have to say next will enrage him. But it has to be said . . . and dealt with. “He’s got his fingers—and his trust fund—in a bunch of different pies here. Anthony Zanetti. Gabriel Santini.” I look at him and wait for him to connect the dots.

“Nico Valducci.” He says the name I didn’t want to. “My father’s been in bed with him for years.”

“Yeah, I know. I was hoping to talk to your dad while we were here, get some information from him, but it looks like you’re in charge now.”

“I am. And I have a meeting set up with Nico early next week. To discuss the fact that I’m not as amenable to organized crime in my casino as my father has always been.”

“Do you.” He’s got me thinking now. We’ve got to handle this carefully if we don’t want blowback from the mob—which I definitely don’t, for Chloe’s and Sebastian’s sakes—and I can totally see a couple avenues we can exploit, if we’re careful. And if we don’t mind getting our hands a little dirty.

Normally, I’m not a guy who likes to mess with that. I’ve made it my life’s mission to run a transparent corporation, one that takes care of its employees and the world and does a lot more good than harm. After all, my world is pretty black and white, good and bad—or it always has been until now. I’ve always tried to be on the right side of the line, have always kept my business on that line as well.

But this is about Chloe and what was done to her. There isn’t much I wouldn’t do to avenge her. And there isn’t much I wouldn’t do to stop the despicable excuse for a human being that is my brother from getting the kind of power that would let him hurt more people with impunity. To bring him down and guarantee Chloe’s emotional security? I’ll get my hands dirty for that. And I probably won’t even feel bad afterward.

Though Sebastian hasn’t said anything else, I can all but see the wheels turning in his head.

So I ask, “What are you thinking?”
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What did I think?

I'm still at a loss for words; book one ended with such an OMG moment and in book two after a few too many downs, things are looking up. Book three picks ups exactly where book two left off and this time Ethan is going after baby bro Brandon, not just for Chloe, but for everyone he's ever hurt. If you thought the previous books were good, you will flip when you read this one. A little side note, do you remember Sebastian and Aria from Play Me, well they make an appearance in this one. YAY Crossovers!  The most dramatic moment in this book will have you screaming finally and I'm just gonna throw this out there but I never thought it was possible to hate Ethan's mom any more than I already did from the previous books.

I know we are promised a fourth book in this gripping series, but honestly, the ending in this one was just absolutely perfect. Things finally look really good for Ethan and Chloe that I'm afraid of what the next book holds in store. Just when you think this story can't get any better it does, Ms. Wolff really knows how to write incredible stories that keep you flipping the pages like there is no tomorrow.
