Grayson Vol. 1: Agents of Spyral (New 52) by Tim Seeley

25690597YOU THINK YOU KNOW NIGHTWING ....
YOU DON'T KNOW DICK

So, we know Dick Grayson aka. Nightwing is dead (like heroes ever really die) following the whole Crime Syndicate events, well the he's back in this catchy conspiracy filled story.

Spyral is out to unmask all the heroes while keeping their identities a secret; but if there is one thing we know it's that Batman and his team always catch the nut jobs. Well Dick is know going by Agent 37 and he is on a mission to unmask the mysterious Mr. Minos and his diabolical plan (because we know he has one, my guess is world domination).

This series sure starts off very action packed with a couple of deaths and a whole lot of espionage. The art of course is very impressive and evocative; let's see if this promising series continues to deliver.

Blame The Mistletoe by Dani Collins

23258101This was a really nice story about finding a second chance at love in the least likeliest of places. Liz Flowers and Blake Canon are both divorcee's having a somewhat bad Christmas until they run into each other at a friend's party; it's attraction at first sight until they realize Liz was married to Blake's ex-wife's brother and Blake was married to Liz's ex-husband's sister.

Well, Blake and Liz realize they have something good and not even crappy exes and and troubles will keep them apart; plus it helps that their kids think it's a match made in heaven. Blake was such a great male lead, really his ex-wife did not deserve such a good guy and Liz was just great, at first I hated how she was being nice to her ex-in-laws but once she goes through her rational about letting go of old grudges and being kind I was like aww. Beside any problem I had with Liz being in Marietta because of her ex-family was overshadowed by her seeing Blake again.

I loved when Liz had a mini confrontation with her ex and his new wife and put those two in their places and the two years later was beyond sweet. This is a feel good, very happy story about two very nice characters that really deserved a happy ending.

Justice, Inc. by Michael Uslan, Giovanni Timpano (Illustrator)

24907644In this new time travel story featuring The Shadow, The Avenger and Doc Savage we get an interesting story with a lot of potential. Though this first volume needed a little more to give it that extra kick, it was still good enough to be a series you'll want to be on the lookout for.

Taking place during World War II we see the race for the next big weapon and what people are willing to do for money. The art is impressive, it's bold and charismatic, very eye catching. For an opener it was good, let's see what Justice Inc. brings us in the future.

At His Service: Parts 1-4 by Suzanne Rock

18988479Finally this super addictive and dramatic story is available in one book; originally published in four parts.

Karin Norell is working at the Palazzo when she meets her super stressed and incredibly good looking Leo Perconti. As Leo stresses over the problems with his hotel, his crazy brothers and his even crazier ex-wife. Karen is stressing over her degree and the conflict between employee and employer.

The love, the drama, it was even better reading this romance a second time; even better, you don't have to wait for the next part. Suzanne Rock really knows how to give you an incredible story with great characters; plus later this year we can expect to see another book by Ms. Rock featuring Leo's rival.

Kissing Mr. Wrong by Kerri Carpenter

25491018Okay, I would have given this book a higher score except the story reminded me of the worst thing one of my friends ever said to me, "Your brother has a nice ass"; seriously wrong on so many levels. Those are the kind of words no sister ever wants to hear said about her brother.

Vanessa Hewitt meets a good looking guy named John (no last names exchanged) at a bar, they hook-up and she shares all of this in full XXX detail with her best friend Jess. Months later Vanessa is helping Jess with her engagement party and Jess brings up that baby bro Jack will be coming to help Vanessa with the party.

John "Jack" Campbell is back in town for his sister's engagement party, but first there's someone he wants to see; except their reunion isn't as exciting as he thought when they learn who the other is.

The story is short and traumatic, I mean dramatic; it's only traumatic if you're a sister that received way too many details about her brother. The was great, John was such a softie, I was rooting for him the whole time. Vanessa was nice and I even loved the whole confronting over critical mom. I did feel like the book needed an extra chapter or two of just John and Vanessa; but as a love at first sight type of story it worked nicely.

Cowboy Valentine by Mia Hopkins

25359722Corazón "Cora" Gomez is leaving her small town and going to an Ivy League school, she has no time for distractions, so yeah that means no guys.

Caleb MacKinnon is back in his hometown after his father falls ill and he's needed back at the family ranch. On Valentine's Day, his date stands him up and somehow he ends up at the ice cream parlor where Cora works, after some talking, some flirting and some convincing the two go for a ride that ends up turning into a relationship.

When the Cora is too leave finally arrives what will Caleb do to show her they belong? Will he follow love? Will he stay in his small town?

The story is sweet and short; the way the characters connect really comes across on the pages. Cora was super determined and given her parents you understand why; Caleb on the other hand is such a softy and the way he goes after Cora, swoon.

Nightwing Vol. 5: Setting Son (The New 52) by Kyle Higgins

21991166The last issues in the Nightwing storyline before the release of Grayson: Agents of Spyral. This was a pretty decent read, Dick reminisce about his life so far and what has helped him become the man he is. Batman appears and they have a final discussion about what it will take for Dick to succeed in his next adventure and we see him being recruited by Spyral.

I felt this book could have been better considering this closed out a series of events and ended a chapter in Dick's life.

Cowboy, It's Cold Outside by Katherine Garbera

23367813This was a very sweet holiday read; Lucy DeMarco has turned into a semi-grinch following some shocking revelations by her father on his deathbed. When Lucy finds herself needing a place to crash after her pipes freeze (I am still so unclear how that is possible) her friend Lane Scott lets her stay at his cottage and there she meets another looking for a place to crash.

When a storm makes it impossible for Trey Scott to continue to the gathering his family is having, he decides what the hell, he'll crash at his brother's place. Trey and Lucy find a way to pass the night and from there what started as fun turns into two sad hearts finding the one person that makes them smile.

The story was really sweet and when Trey finally get's his head out of his lens, well that was just icing on the cake.

Stealing Hearts by Erika Marks

24486774This story was going so nicely and then the final chapters were just so bleh; I felt like the end was just so rushed.

We get a funny meeting scene between Mick Atwell and Lucy Waverly; which by the way know-it-all big brothers should not share certain stories with their best friend's. Mick and Lucy worked really well throughout the whole story and seemed like a very well set couple, but then at the end it just went wrong. When Mick finally comes back to grovel to Lucy, there really isn't any groveling or "let me think about it" from Lucy. Plus the whole scene with Lucy's ex-boss and what was supposed to be an action packed moment just fell flat.

I've read a few of Ms. Marks stories and I'm usually very impressed, however, although this one was good, it wasn't great.

Kate & Alf by Carrie Stone

24479614This book was meh, Kate and Alf have been together for like forever and at the age of 32 Kate finally thinks that this is the birthday Alf will pop the big question. When that doesn't happen, Kate begins to wonder if Alf is the "ONE" or should she just move on.

Enter Alf's friend Marcus and with his kind demeanor he has Kate questioning her life and should she keep hanging on to Alf.

Okay first of, what made this book so meh was the fact that there is no way a guy can be that oblivious, you've been with this woman for seven years and you practically don't know her. Then we finally see Alf grow and become more attuned to Kate and Kate just automatically embraces this change in such a rushed manner. I could not feel the communication between the two characters so this one is meh.

The Millionaire Daddy Project by Roxanne Snopek

25377508Dane Bergman is Mr. Top-of-the-World, his company, The Bergman Group is super successful. He is a super commitment phobe which when you learn his backstory you understand.

Pamela "Pam" Atwater is Dane's super efficient personal assistant and second in command. She is such a pushover softy.

When Dane learns that one of his many flings resulted in Dani, a cute little girl who is still reeling from losing her mommy, he decides to do the responsible thing.

Dane starts relying even more on Pam and eventually these two come together. Sure they have some hiccups, what with Dane being an idiot and Pam trying to protect her heart. The proposal was so sweet, however, at the end there is reference to them being finally married; it would have been nice to get a page or two on them getting actually married.

At first I kinda did not like Dane at all he seemed like a jerk and Pam seemed like such a pushover when it came to him. As the story progresses you get to see why each character is the way they are and they grow on you. Ms. Snopek really knows how to bring a dramatic and captivating story that keeps the reader hooked and thinking of the happy ending.

Mike's Wager: A Camerons of Tide's Way Short Story by Skye Taylor

25421356This was a super short read, the mini story follows Mike Kennedy who makes a wager with his friends in Cambridge to show that his hometown of  Tide's Way, North Carolina really is as kind and goodhearted as he believes them to be.

Mike wagers that if there was a homeless person in his hometown, the people would be kind enough to bring him food. Mike uses his spring break to go spend a week disguised as a homeless man. After three days he is beginning to feel discouraged, until someone leaves him a plate of nice warm food for him to enjoy and the next day he gets invited to breakfast. No one knew who he was only that he needed a meal. After his return to school, he takes his winnings and decides to spend them on the homeless people in the area.

It's a quick 30-minute read about kindness and optimism. It might be nice if the author expanded this short story in a full book.

Hand Drawn Jokes for Smart Attractive People by Matthew Diffee

23492703New York Times cartoonist Matthew Diffee brings us a book that is darkly and satirically hilarious. The jokes in this book are not for everyone and depending on your sense of humor you might find them offensive or you might not understand them at all. The cartoons have minimal text and require the reader to understand conceptual comedy.

I had a lot of fun reading this one. The entire book is in black and white and the pages that have text are just beyond funny. If you're looking for a new coffee table book that will show you which of your friends are smart and which ones are not this is a perfect book, plus you get to tease them a little or a lot. Diffee really knows how to write an engaging collection of cartoons with very a very appealing title.

P.S. My favorite cartoon had to do with Doctor and Lawyer and the retention of one of those two

Southern Bastards, Vol. 2: Gridiron (Southern Bastards #5-9) by Jason Aaron, Jason Latour (Illustrator)

23911614Oh my freakin god, at the end of volume one Euless "Coach" Boss kills Earl Tubb and the people of Craw County, Alabama stood idly by and did nothing. In volume two we get to see the story behind the monster; growing up poor, with a dead mother and a criminal father Euless didn't have much. The only thing Euless has is football and when that is taken from him he goes dark, I mean really dark.

While reading, I felt really bad for Euless at first, but as his story progresses you start to think what a douche. He revolved his whole life around one event that he eventually becomes so much worse than the petty criminal his father was. The people of Craw County were just awful, they turn a blind eye and prefer to hide out of fear. They don't even realize that together they can overpower Euless and his thugs. Plus going off the stereotypes in the book, I'm gonna say, guns are everywhere.

The art like in volume one is impressive, but what really hooks you is the compelling characters and the dramatic story. Like volume one, volume two ends in a death and the introduction of a new character. I'd like to say who dies and who's coming, but what's the fun in that.

Spread, Vol. 1: No Hope (Spread #1-6) by Justin Jordan, Kyle Strahm (artist)

24935407It's dark, it's gory, it's sickening good. In this new story by the super talented team of Justin Jordan and Kyle Strahm we are introduced to No, Holly, and Hope in a post-apocalyptic world.

When a mysterious and gorily beautiful virus referred to as the spread that kills everything. No is a man immune to the virus with very little to say; when he encounters a baby that turn out to be able to kill the spread with bodily fluids (I did say gory), he's hmm this could work. Later No and the baby that is later referred to as Hope (yeah, she is a special baby) meet Holly a woman that is captured by slavers and a little crazy (tragic backstory hinted at). Obviously the spread wants to kill the baby and what is left of civilization is shit so yeah things get pretty crazy.

The story is told from Hope's point of view, reflecting on the past. This is a definitely must checkout series. I will say that the art alone makes it a must. Plus the characters are really interesting, especially No, who seems to only ever say no, no, no.

22358461The "Chicago Organized Worker's League" or C.O.W.L. the superhero union is in the mist of new contract negations; but that's not the worst, they're dealing with super-villains and mobsters, and potentially corruption amongst their ranks.

The story was really good; heroes are no longer saving people to be good Samaritans, it's a paycheck with a whole of politics attached to it. The ending was a real cliffhanger, we see the unfolding of a conspiracy and just how bad you have to be to be a hero.

23834613Excerpt

I was so tired of being afraid . . . and weak. When would it end?

My head jerked up when I heard someone approach.

The doorknob twisted and Killian stepped in. He paused, his smile fading and his brows drawing tight. He shut the door behind him as I hurried to rustle through my notes in an attempt to look busy.

He placed his large palms against the desk. “What’s wrong?”

I sat and reached for a pen, keeping my gaze averted. “It’s loud out there,” I managed.

He glanced back behind him, although the door remained shut. Shadows of concern darkened his features when he returned his face to mine. He didn’t believe me. Why would he? It didn’t take a genius to see I was scared.

My grip tightened on the pen. “Maybe I should work from home. If we talk some now, I can get most of the work done at my mother’s house.”

“What happened?”

Killian’s harsh tone had me meeting his stare. For the most part, Killian was pretty laid- back, but rage lingered just beneath the surface. It was why he was almost undefeated in his weight class. He knew when to release it.

Fury stirred behind his deep blue irises. I knew it wouldn’t take a lot for him to open the lock that caged his anger. If he suspected that anyone had mistreated me there would be serious trouble, with me coming out badly in the end. “I don’t think I should be here,” I told him truthfully, hating my voice for how it shook.

Killian stiffened. “Sofia . . .”

“It was a mistake,” I blurted. “I’m not ready.”

Killian’s focus narrowed in on my face. He was trying to figure out my sudden change. Knowing so scared me senseless.

I stood then sat and stood again. My words made no sense, but they were the only ones I could form then. Fear paralyzed me constantly, making it hard to function.

That was the reason I’d turned to computers to begin with and become so adept. It was just me and a machine incapable of judging or hurting me. If a task or function didn’t work, I started over until I got it right. I never had to worry what could happen to me when I sat in front of the keyboard. Never had to fear who could reach out and grab me. Never had to be afraid it would spill my darkest secrets. I could escape into my work, knowing I couldn’t be harmed.

Life didn’t have that luxury.

“I shouldn’t have come across so strong,” Killian said.

I straightened, my lips parting slightly. “What?”

He bowed his head, releasing a heavy breath. “When I invited you to come here, and you agreed, I thought maybe you were agreeing to more—I shouldn’t have assumed that. I’m sorry.” My grip loosened on my pen until it fell from my grasp and onto the desk. Oh, no. Please don’t.

“I should know better than to push. I just thought, it won’t happen again,” he added quickly. “I swear it won’t. But please don’t leave. I meant it when I said that I needed you.”

He did want more. And now I’d ruined things.

I rubbed my eyes, frustrated.

When Killian first took over the gym last fall, his expenses were huge and his profit minimal. I’d built him the most basic site to attract business and helped him with promo. Philly took care of its own. When word got out that he was a local boy—with five years of professional MMA matches under his belt and taking on trainees—business exploded and so did the chaos. He needed a better site, a better bookkeeping program, and better organization.

“I need you, Sofia,” he repeated. “I can’t trust anyone else with my accounts and personal information. Will you stay and help me?”

He needed me. I dropped my hands away and lifted my chin. “Okay.”

“Yeah?” Considering I’d changed my mind twice in the span of an hour, I couldn’t really blame him for doubting me or my sanity.

“Yes, I’ll help you,” I promised. I rustled through the papers on the desk again, trying to offer more of an explanation. But there I was again, unable to make sense out of what was right in front of me.

I could feel Killian’s gaze on me. Originally, I wasn’t supposed to start until the end of July. But when he called me a few days ago and gave me the lowdown, I knew he couldn’t wait.

He continued to watch me in silence. I finally stopped and lifted my chin. “I’m sorry,

Killian. I don’t want to be so . . .” “Pathetic” was the first word that came to mind. But thankfully I didn’t say it out loud.

“You don’t need to be sorry about anything.”

But he was wrong.

I motioned to the door, unable to keep my eyes on his. “The thing is I need some privacy. It’s hard to focus with the noise.”

Killian leaned back and crossed his bulging arms, exposing the religious tats painting them. There was something unnerving about the Archangel Michael staring straight at me. Then again, he knew my sins well.

“The doors need to stay open, and so do the blinds,” Killian said.

A group of male voices laughed some distance away. Was it those same guys? I motioned toward the door again, my hand starting to shake. “I-I can’t concentrate. It wasn’t this loud last time.”

I wasn’t sure what Killian caught in my expression, but whatever it was deepened his voice. “I’ll buy you some plugs.”

“It won’t be enough,” I added quietly.

He watched me for a beat. Man, it was as if he could see straight into my thoughts.

“Listen, Sofia, most of my guys training are decent. But some aren’t. I want to make sure you’re safe. I can’t do that if I can’t see you.”

“What if I lock—”

“No.” His tone was firm. “I need to know you’re safe at all times.”

23547422This story was not bad, but it was not great; it lacked a little something. Christina Grey Cooper and Dare Cooper have been married for ten years and for some time now Dare has been acting distant. After seeing just how much it pained Dare to spend time with her on her 30th birthday, Christina comes to the realization that her marriage is over. Christina decides to go back to Marietta, but when Dare realizes that she has finally left, he decides that although he was pushing Christina away with that intent, he no longer wants her gone.

The reason that this story felt off is that Dare is like I don't want my wife she deserves better, but then he's like no I changed my mind, I want her with me. The entire story felt like Dare and Christina basically just stopped communicating.
